Rhode Island's Twin River racetrack-casino, owned by the principles of Mohegan Sun's former management company, were given state permission to offer free play slot machine promotions that are designed to attract and retain customers.

Both of Connecticut's Indian casinos have long been offering free slot play promotions to its customers. Twin River's June free slot promotions likely contributed to Foxwoods' 9 percent drop in slot revenues that month, just weeks after Foxwoods opened its MGM Grand casino and hotel expansion. Mohegan Sun also experienced a 9 percent decline in slot revenues for the month of June.

Both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun also reported declines in slot revenues for the month of July. Mohegan Sun's slot machine revenue dropped even more steeply in July, fallying by 14.6 percent compared to the same period last year while Foxwoods reported a 3.2 decline in July slot revenues.

Foxwoods began its free slot play promotions in November 2006 and Mohegan Sun began their free slot play program about a year later, in September 2007. Foxwoods offered $4.9 million in free slot play promotions last month (July) while Mohegan Sun gave out $3.3 million in free slot play promotions that month.
